Joseph Pilates

The Pilates Method was originally designed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates. Born in 1880, in Germany, Pilates suffered a series of diseases throughout his childhood.

Determined to overcome his physical frailty he devoted himself to the study of the human physiognomy and its various physical ways of reinforcing and improving it. He studied and mastered several sports and physical practices.

The first studio was established in New York in 1920 which obtained great notoriety amongst athletes, dancers, gymnasts and actors. These professionals recognized that the Method perfected and complemented their traditional routines and it catered to their personal needs: An increase in strength without an increase in volume, balance between strength and flexibility and harmony between mind and body.
